A stunning nautical wedding… and a dinosaur – Lori & Hassan

4 Oct

I have to admit that I have a real soft spot for Carolyn Scott’s work. Her weddings and engagement shoots are everything that Bonfire Night Bride is about – colourful, fun and full of love and it is for this reason that I did a little dance inside when Lori & Hassan’s stunning September 4th, 2011 wedding in Outer Banks (North Carolina) landed in my inbox! It is just exquisite.

It is with regret that Lori & Hassan’s wedding will be my last post on Bonfire Night Bride – I am undecided as to whether I am going to carry on my blog after my own wedding but I may pop up every now and again if I see something that would be rude not to share! 🙂 I am honoured and extremely grateful to go out with such an amazing real wedding from a photographer that is not only amazing at what she does but also a beautiful person. I cannot thank you enough Carolyn!

We weren’t really supposed to shoot this wedding initially, but we were sure glad it happened that way!

I did Lori and Hassan’s engagement pictures in January, which, at this point, seems like eternities ago. Her engagement session inquiry email to me stated, “We’re planning a destination wedding and will most likely pick a local photographer there for the big day.” That’s totally cool and happens a lot. So I went about taking engagement pictures for them in downtown Raleigh on the coldest winter morning ever! I remember shaking, I remember Wrigley, their adorable dog, shaking, but them being very good sports. Well, low and behold, they received their engagement pictures back and decided to book Geoff and me for their Outer Banks wedding. We were super excited, thankful, and honored.

Since their engagement, I’ve photographed their dog Wrigley and Lori’s bridal portraits and feel like I know them quite well. I wasn’t nervous, they weren’t nervous, and the whole wedding was smooth sailing at the Outer Banks. Well, we were slightly nervous the week before when Hurricane Irene hit the coast and flooded their reception venue under 4 feet of water. But the town of Manteo did a fantastic job of cleaning up, and 108 Budleigh looked brand new. It was heart wrenching to see the damage done to some of the areas on the drive in (both structure damage and crop damage).  But all in all, Roanoke Island fared quite well… much better than expected… and the houses had little to no outside damage. Thankfully, it was all very beautiful on their wedding weekend and everyone was thankful. Lori and Hassan enjoyed their beautiful Outer Banks wedding and we were so happy to be there with them to celebrate.

100th Post Thank You!

8 Sep

Back in January I was off work ill with a bad case of flu – real flu, not man flu. Due to daytime tv not being as good as it used to be (bring back Going For Gold) I had to find something else to fill my days with – I began to get more into the wonderful world of Twitter and wedding blogs and subsequently ‘ummed’ and ‘aahed’ about starting my own blog as a journal of my own wedding planning.

After much deliberation Bonfire Night Bride, named after the date of my own wedding, and its first post went live on February 20th 2011 and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every minute of the blogging world! It started from nothing and has slowly but surely evolved into not only a hobby but a great love of mine. Meeting and featuring new and amazing wedding suppliers, photographers, brides to be amongst many other wonderful wedding folk has become a real passion of mine and I would like to take this opportunity as my 100th post to thank each and every one of you who have been involved with Bonfire Night Bride, you have all been amazing and without you there would be no blog! So here goes…

A burst of summer brightness – Lindsay & Zac

6 Aug

Here I have a gorgeous July 9th summer ceremony. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of weddings full of personality and vibrancy so when I saw this wedding from the amazingly talented Carolyn Scott Photography I literally fell. in. love. The ultimate definition of ‘summer’  brought to life within a wedding!

This was a total breath of fresh air wedding! Lindsay and Zac, who were married at a new venue in Greensboro, North Carolina called Adam’s Place (a private property that’s been recently renovated to accommodate outdoor ceremonies and receptions), held a stunning wedding. What was so great was that they chose all bright, vibrant colors instead of a single color or two, and it just had such a happy feel about it. 🙂 I met these two only very recently, but in the short time we’ve known each other it’s clear that they are amazing people with a wonderful group of supportive family and friends. We had a great time working with their wonderful bridesmaids and groomsmen as well! The ceremony was held outdoors and it was hot… and I mean hot. As in, both Geoff’s camera and my camera overheated during the ceremony (no, neither stopped taking pictures, thank goodness, but the red warning light was totally on and the LCD screen was blank for about five minutes). There were a few moments where I was prepared to black out. Maybe it’s because I’m from the north, as no one in the wedding party (even Lindsay with her heavy and gorgeous dress) broke a sweat. But the ceremony was beautiful and lead to an even more beautiful reception. Let me tell you – outdoor receptions in the evening in NC are just beyond beautiful (when the weather’s nice, of course). The lighting was perfect and they danced on the patio. It was super low stress and everyone was so nice. Lindsay and Zac took off at the end of the night and headed to Jamaica for their honeymoon. Enjoy their adorably detailed wedding!

Just exquisite. I have to admit this is one of my favourite summer weddings that I have seen in a long long time. Thanks once again Carolyn, you are a star! Sending a massive congratulations over the pond to Lindsay & Zac!

Love on TV – Ginny & Carson’s Engagement Shoot

29 Jul

It is an absolute honour to once again feature the work of the amazingly talented Carolyn Scott all the way from Raleigh, North Carolina. Janice & Dan’s big day was my first US wedding and this time I have my first US engagement shoot – the gorgeous Ginny & Carson, the location Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Here is of one of my oldest friends, Ginny. (Note: Ginny’s real name is Angela for the record, but I haven’t called her that since the 8th grade, so I think it’s fair to say that it’s Ginny for this blog post.) We met at some point in elementary school, I don’t even really remember when or how, and have been causing problems for all of our teachers ever since! She was one of my wonderful bridesmaids for my wedding and I will be one of hers in the spring! I was super excited to help her pick out a fantastic photographer in Pittsburgh for her wedding, but even more excited to photographer her engagement pictures while I was home, yaaay!

I met Carson a few years ago and the first thing that struck me was that he is exactly. like. Ginny. It’s pretty much if you put Ginny into a guy’s body and had him walk around and say the same things Ginny would. It’s hilarious.  Their wedding is taking place at a church in New Ken with their reception at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland. For their engagement photographs, they wanted pictures taken in the Northside in the Mexican War Streets and on the North Shore near PNC Park and Heinz Field (Go Steelers!). They wanted them very Pittsburgh-centric… and I think it accomplished just that. 🙂

Stunning. Thank you so much Carolyn! I hope the happy couple have an amazing wedding day and you enjoy your bridesmaid duties 🙂

Classy Colourful Real Wedding: Janice & Dan

8 Jul

I am so pleased to be hosting my first American real wedding from the fabulous Carolyn Scott Photography, all the way from North carolina, USA. University sweethearts Janice and Dan’s wedding is full of fun, colour and class. Just perfect!

Janice and Dan were married on June 18th, 2011 at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC (their reception was held at the same venue). They met during undergrad at the University of North Carolina very near to their wedding venue. Today (nearly ten years later!), he is completing his residency to be a neurologist and she is a public health research analyst. Dan is Filipino-American and Janice is Taiwanese-American, and it’s always beautiful to watch a mix of cultures combine in a beautiful wedding ceremony and day. Janice and Dan are perfect for each other. They make each other laugh nonstop and are so fun to be around. They were a wonderful couple to work with. Janice even ambushed Dan with a squirt gun for their first look pictures – how great is that?!  While the weather was supposed to be great, the wind picked up during their ceremony and the rain started pouring right after! We did their newlywed pictures inside the Carolina Inn and it didn’t stop us from getting beautiful shots. It was a great day!

An absolutely stunning wedding captured by Carolyn. The surroundings, decor and style make for some amazing photos of what looks like a very memorable day for Janice and Dan. Happy, smiling faces all round!
